Description of SightingThis was on or about 10/22/2020 on a hunting trip in the North Maine Woods. I say on or about, because the trip was almost a week long and I don’t remember exactly which evening it occurred. Context: Myself and a friend (who works as an environmental/civil engineer) spend a lot of time in the Maine woods hunting. We had been a few days into a trip to the North Maine Woods near Seboomook Lake and had stopped in after a day of hunting to one of the very few places that has enough cell service to ring home and check on our families. The weather for this trip had been fairly terrible as far as an upland hunter is concerned–namely rainy and misty with mild temperatures and fairly strong winds. The evening of the sighting while my friend made his call home, I was outside the truck and looking around and enjoying the remainder of the evening thinking about getting back to camp for a warm dinner after a long day of quite awful hunting. I looked to the Eastern sky and saw a glow low on the horizon that I first took to be Jupiter showing through the misty skies at dusk, or even a smaller object much closer that was obscured due to the atmospheric/weather conditions. After a few more minutes, let’s say it was less than five, I decided to try to install an astronomy app on my phone to identify what I was initially assuming was a planet. The app download failed as there was hardly any cell service in the area, so I abandoned that idea. My friend finished his call and climbed out of the truck. I pointed to the sky and said something to the effect of “Hey, check that out. Thought it was Jupiter or even a star, but it’s really bright.” He looked up and dismissed it as the ISS and said “look you can even kinda see like an arm or structure on it”. Naturally I told him the ISS isn’t in GSO and appears like a fast moving star or plane in the night sky, not a static object. We dropped it at that. I foolishly didn’t even think to take photos. UAPSRS ASSESSMENT: On the date in question, Mars would have been visible at dusk when looking to the East. In the southwestern sky, Saturn and Jupiter would also have been visible under these conditions; based on direction, time, date, and description, UAPSRS concludes with high confidence the object observed was the planet Mars. Animal DisturbanceThere were trained hunting dogs in the truck who did not alert or seem agitated in any way
Witness FeelingsWe felt completely fine and normal, but the inability to identify it sat with me as a missed opportunity.
Witness AssessmentIt could have been something completely prosaic in nature and not at all far away from where we were (although we have hunted that area countless times and never seen it or anything like it)
Additional InformationI have not reported this anywhere else, although I did share it with a Maine-based UFO/Paranormal researcher and author for posterity on the off-chance he hears of anything similar. Nomar Slevik is the reseacher.
